Avalanche warning for region Indre Sogn Tuesday 21.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

The danger increases with strong winds. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies.

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Monday 20. January 2020

Siste dagene har perioder med nedbør og vind gitt ferske fokksnøflak mange steder, også litt ned i skogen. Fokksnøen har varierende fasthet. Mandag formiddag har temperaturen steget og nysnøgrensen ligger på ca 1200-1300 moh. Dette har gitt fuktig snøoverflate høyt til fjells der nedbøren har kommet som regn.

Det er tidligere observert svake lag nede i snødekket, men observasjoner fra Sogndalsdalen søndag tyder på at svake lag nå stort sett er begrenset til enkelte lommer i høyfjellet over ca 1300 der snødekket er tynt.

22 mm precipitation, up to 50 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from west. -7 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Mye vind og nysnø gir ferske fokksnøflak i lesider vendt mot Ø. Der det kommer mest nysnø kan det være lett å løse ut skred i den ferske fokksnøen, og det kan være fare for naturlig utløste, tørre flakskred. Lavere ned vil gjenfrysing av vått snødekke virke stabiliserende.
